• Review common and leadership responsibilities.
• Obtain a briefing from the Compensation/Claims Unit Leader (COMP) or Finance Section Chief (FSC).
• Establish 800 claims number; develop operator script before going "live." Place adjusters on standby. When appropriate, mobilize claim adjusters and establish claims center logistics and protocol.
• Establish a log and gather facts necessary for establishing liability risk and claims program.
• Collaborate with Legal Officer to develop parameters for claim types, strategies, and release requirements.
• Collaborate with Public Information Officer (PIO) regarding external message: community commitments, 800 number, claims center, and hours of operation.
• Establish and coordinate an investigation team, obtain witness statements and ensure property is secure, as necessary.
• Review Form 206 Medical Plan.
• Develop claim payment mechanism.
• Develop/maintain financial reserves estimates for claim exposure and operations costs.
• Provide status updates to FSC on claim numbers and costs.
• Keep the FSC briefed on unit status and activity.
• Manage claim operations until all claims are finalized.
• Document any incomplete investigations.
• Advise COMP on the nature and status of all existing and potential claims.
• Provide Legal Officer with documentation support on litigated claims.
• Ensure the use of correct organizational forms.
• Document follow-up action needs by local organizations.
• Demobilize unit in accordance with Incident Demobilization Plan.
• Maintain Form 214a Individual Log and forward to Documentation Unit Leader (DOCL) for disposition.
